Introduction
Last week, I walked through how to read a scientific study using the Three‑Pass Method — a skill that makes research feel less intimidating and more actionable. But reading is only half the battle. Before you can analyze a study, you need to know how to find high‑quality, peer‑reviewed research in the first place.
This week’s Flux is all about that: the tools, strategies, and search habits that let you access real scientific literature without paying for journal subscriptions. These are the same methods I use for my own research and for writing Skeptical Improvement.
And to keep the habit‑science thread going, I’m also introducing the new sources I’m pulling into next week’s Monday Main — specifically, papers that help evaluate Clear’s claim that cravings are an essential part of the habit loop.
This Week’s Sources
To evaluate Clear’s claim that cravings are an essential part of the habit loop, I focused on research that examines how habits actually form, how they’re triggered, and how they interface with goals. These four papers dig into the mechanisms behind habitual behavior — not food‑temptation cravings, but the cognitive and contextual processes that make habits automatic.
Neal et al. (2012) — How Do Habits Guide Behavior?
This study shows that context cues — not cravings — trigger habitual actions. People often believe they act out of motivation or desire, but the data show that strong habits are activated automatically when the relevant context appears. This is one of the clearest demonstrations that habitual behavior is cue‑driven, with the “craving” step not necessarily present.
Galla & Duckworth (2015) — Beneficial Habits Mediate Self‑Control
This paper explains why people with high self‑control don’t rely on constant motivation or craving suppression. Instead, they build stable, beneficial habits that run automatically. The key insight: strong habits reduce the need for effortful inhibition. Once established, habits operate independently of craving.
Carden & Wood (2018) — Habit Formation and Change
This review highlights the cognitive and attentional mechanisms that drive habit formation. It shows that repeated behavior in stable contexts builds automatic context–response associations. Crucially, they note that environmental cues can activate habitual responses even when people are not experiencing cravings. This directly challenges Clear’s craving‑centric model.
Wood & Neal (2007) — A New Look at Habits and the Habit–Goal Interface
A foundational theoretical paper showing that habits are context‑triggered behaviors that operate without a mediating goal or desire. Once habits form, they run independently of craving, motivation, or intention. This explains why habits feel automatic and why craving is not a reliable predictor of habitual action.
The Next Section of Atomic Habits: Cravings
Clear frames cravings as the “second stage” of the habit loop — the internal spark that drives action. But the research paints a more nuanced picture.
Many habits don’t rely on cravings at all. They rely on context cues.
As Neal et al. (2012) put it:
“Context cues automatically bring habitual responses to mind.”
This means your brain often triggers a habit before you feel any craving. Cravings matter early in habit formation, but once a habit is strong, the loop looks more like:
Cue → Action → Outcome
No craving required.
This distinction matters because it shifts the focus from “motivation” to environmental design, which is exactly where the research points.
How to Find a Research Paper (for Free)
It may seem like I pull sources out of nowhere, but in reality there are many free resources out there if you know where to look.
1. Start with Open Access Databases
These platforms host many peer-reviewed articles:
- DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals): 20,000+ journals
- PubMed Central: full-text biomedical and psychology papers
- CORE: massive repository of open-access PDFs
- Semantic Scholar: AI summaries and links to free versions
These are great first steps in your research process.
2. Use Google Scholar Like a Scientist
Google Scholar isn’t fully open access, but it’s one of the best ways to locate free versions. Tips:
- Look for [PDF] links on the right side
- Click “All versions” under a paper
- Add keywords like PDF, preprint, open access
- Use citation chaining:
- Backward: check the references
- Forward: click “Cited by” to see newer papers
This is the fastest way to find free copies of paywalled research.
3. Install Browser Extensions
These tools automatically surface free PDFs:
- Unpaywall – checks millions of repositories
- Open Access Button – finds legal author-uploaded versions
If you read research regularly, these are game-changers.
4. Use Library Access (Even Without Being a Student)
Even if your local university library only allows students to access databases, public libraries often offer JSTOR, EBSCO, or ProQuest through their digital services.
This is one of the most underrated ways to access research.
5. Contact Authors Directly
Researchers expect this – and they’re usually happy to share their work.
A simple email like:
“Hi, I’m interested in your paper on X. Could you share a copy?”
…works surprisingly well.
6. Search Smarter: How to Use Keywords Like a Researcher
Here’s the part most people never learn: searching is a skill. You can dramatically improve your results by using structured keyword strategies.
A. Start with a Core Concept
Pick the main idea you’re searching for. Example: habit formation
B. Add a Mechanism or Subtopic
This narrows the search. Examples:
- habit formation context cues
- habit formation automaticity
- habit formation attention
C. Add a Method or Domain (optional)
This helps when you want a specific type of study. Examples:
- habit formation context cues longitudinal
- habit formation automaticity experimental
- habit formation attention review article
D. Use Boolean Operators
These are simple but powerful:
- AND — narrows results
- habit formation AND automaticity
- OR — broadens results
- habit OR routine OR automaticity
- NOT — excludes irrelevant topics
- habit formation NOT addiction
E. Use Quotation Marks for Exact Phrases
- “habit formation”
- “context cues”
- “automatic behavior”
F. Combine Everything
Here’s what a strong search query looks like:
“habit formation” AND “context cues” AND automaticity NOT addiction
Or:
“habit automaticity” AND environment AND psychology
G. Use Scholar’s Filters
On the left sidebar:
- Year range — great for finding recent research
- Review articles — perfect for beginners
- Sort by relevance — usually better than “sort by date”
H. Use Author Names as Keywords
Once you find a good paper, search the authors directly:
- Wendy Wood habit
- David Neal automaticity
Researchers tend to publish multiple papers on the same topic.
I. Use “Related Articles”
This is one of the fastest ways to find similar research.
